Post ANTM show Angelea is excitedly nervous about the new chapters in her life. The America’s Next Top Model: All Stars fan favorite is newly married and expecting a baby boy! Angelea says that she is “looking forward to being a Mother”.

Having connected with Angelea for her cameo appearance in my film “Breathe” I learned firsthand that Angelea is more than meets the eye. Her beauty and bold personality will catch you but what many don’t know is that Angelea has a soft side and a passion for women’s health.

I knew she would be a great panelist for “The Mother’s Annual Live and Learn Event Luncheon” known as “The MALL Event” where she appeared alongside another model Cynthia Bailey from The Real Housewives of Atlanta and myself to speak to women about health.

Angelea jumped at the chance to participate when I reached out to her noting “I am eager to connect with women especially expecting Moms to share my story and to urge them to get to the doctors.”

Angelea has recently signed with Expecting Models and is in the 3-6 month pregnant category. Attendees of “The MALL Event Luncheon” presented by LadiesLiveandLearn.com were eager to meet one of their favorite ANTM All Stars and to see the celebrity Moms baby bump.

Angelea shared with me that one of the reasons that she was excited to join the cast of the film “Breathe” which also stars Robin Givens, Samson Logan, Elise Neal and Jazsmin Lewis was that she connected with the film’s subject of maternal health.

At “The MALL Event Luncheon” Angelea shared with attendees that she has experienced pregnancy related complications. Although there is some nervousness because of this it was simply a reminder to her and she hopes for others on how important it is to go to the doctor and get good prenatal care.

So what are some things that you should consider when eating on the go? A diet rich in fruit, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains is what helps make up a healthy and well balanced eating for the whole family. Incorporating menu choices that offer these items is what we should shoot for when ordering fast food and eating on the go.

So here are three simple healthy tips when making fast food menu choices.

Look to add vegetables to you sandwich. Vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce, onions and peppers are low in fat but contain good amounts of vitamins and minerals along with dietary fiber.

Order fruit instead of fries. Fruit like apples and bananas contains antioxidants which help protect the body from disease and help boost our immunity.

Choose whole wheat bread. Whole grains contain bran and the germ of the grain which contain powerful nutrients which actually take longer to be absorbed by the body and actually make you feel fuller. Whole grains can improve your cardiovascular health and reduce metabolic syndrome.

One of my favorite restaurants for on the go eating is Subway. A great choice is their Fresh Fit meal which pairs a low fat sandwich with a “better for you” side such as apples or lite yogurt or baked chips and a sensible beverages such as 100% juice, low fat milk, bottled water or FUZE fresh brewed green tea.

My mom is a southern belle who used analogies often. When it comes to dressing and ensuring that we wear appropriately fitted clothing she would often say “don’t try to squeeze South Carolina into Davis Station”.

When it comes to rearing children approach to discipline may vary. However, this is more than a phrase used by my mom and many others “a hard head will soften your behind”.

There are many foods my mom cooked when we were growing up that we loved. Her stuffing, candied yams and sweet and sour sausage were some of my favorites. However, at mealtime her choices were usually “take it or leave it”!

The roles models in our homes don’t have to be perfect. They first need to be present. An ever present force guiding and loving us as we grow into the imperfectly perfect people we are meant to be. The TJMS segment about Pregnancy and African-American women sheds light on the maternal health crisis in the U.S..  The Tom Joyner Show is the number one syndicated urban morning radio show in America airing in 100 markets around the country. The listener response to Angela’s story on the TJMS was tremendous. Women and men around the country shared their own stories, concern and outrage over the rising number of near misses and deaths in the U.S. during pregnancy and child birth. Angela’s story has been made into the feature film “Breathe” starring Robin Givens, Elise Neal, Samson Logan, Jazsmin Lewis, Steven Williams, Clyde R. Jones, Angelea Preston and Miguel Nunez.
